Services Counseling for Children, Teens, and Families

At Alabama Child & Adolescent Counseling (ACA Counseling), we specialize in helping children, adolescents, and families navigate life’s challenges with confidence and support. Our team of experienced clinicians provides compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each child and family we serve.

We understand that seeking counseling for your child can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to create a safe, welcoming environment where children feel comfortable expressing themselves and families feel supported throughout the process.

Individual Counseling for Children

Children often struggle to express difficult emotions through words alone. Our therapists are trained in child-centered approaches that help children process their experiences in ways that feel natural and safe.

Through approaches such as play therapy, expressive activities, and developmentally appropriate conversation, we help children build emotional regulation skills, confidence, and healthy coping strategies.

Children may benefit from counseling if they are experiencing:

• Anxiety or excessive worry
• Behavioral challenges at home or school
• Difficulty with emotional regulation
• Social challenges or peer conflict
• Adjustment to life changes
• Grief or loss
• Trauma or stressful experiences

Teen Counseling

Adolescence can be a challenging time for both teens and their families. Our therapists work with teens in a supportive, non-judgmental environment to help them better understand their emotions, relationships, and personal strengths.

Teen counseling focuses on helping adolescents develop healthy coping skills, improve communication, and build resilience as they navigate school, friendships, family dynamics, and life transitions.

Common concerns we address with teens include:

• Anxiety and stress
• Depression or mood changes
• School difficulties or academic stress
• Peer relationships and social pressures
• Family conflict
• Self-esteem and identity development

Family Counseling

Family counseling helps improve communication, strengthen relationships, and support families through difficult transitions. Our therapists work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to create strategies that support healthy family dynamics and emotional connection.

Family therapy may be helpful when families are experiencing:

• Parent-child conflict
• Blended family adjustments
• Divorce or separation
• Communication challenges
• Behavioral concerns within the family system

Play Therapy

Play is the natural language of children. Through play therapy, children are able to express thoughts and emotions that they may not yet have the words to describe.

Our trained clinicians use therapeutic play, creative activities, and structured interventions to help children process experiences, develop emotional regulation, and build confidence.

Play therapy can be particularly helpful for children experiencing:

• Anxiety
• Trauma
• Behavioral challenges
• Social difficulties
• Emotional regulation struggles

Animal-Assisted Therapy

At ACA Counseling, therapy animals may be incorporated into sessions to help children feel more comfortable and engaged in the therapeutic process.

Animal-assisted therapy can help children:

• Feel safe and relaxed in the counseling environment
• Build trust and emotional connection
• Improve engagement in therapy
• Reduce anxiety and stress

Many children find it easier to open up and participate in therapy when interacting with a therapy animal.

Parent Support & Consultation

Parents play a vital role in their child’s progress. Our therapists work closely with parents to provide guidance, support, and practical strategies that can be used at home and in daily routines.

Parent consultations may include:

• Behavior support strategies
• Emotional regulation tools for children
• Parenting guidance during difficult transitions
• Collaboration with schools when appropriate

Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches

Our clinicians are trained in a variety of evidence-based approaches, including:

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
• Trauma-informed therapy
• Play therapy
• Attachment-focused approaches
• Family systems therapy
• Skills-based emotional regulation strategies

Treatment is always tailored to meet the unique needs of each child and family.
